Getting together in order to talk something over, to discuss, to work collaboratively on some issue, or to
learn and study in a group, is a core element in
modern business. In an age where information and communication is prevalent, interpersonal exchange takes up a lot of time, money and other resources. Hence, it is all the more important that communication is really effective and that it can be realized efficiently.

In this respect, the question arises as to whether it has to be always the ‚traditional' form of meeting somebody. If we take a critical look at face-to-face settings, we may come to the following conclusions:

• Face-to-face conferences, project meetings, training seminars and other business events are usually connected with considerable preparatory work with regard to traveling and accommodation. Who hasn't wished for a 36-hour-day on the eve of an important event?
• Traveling can be great, but it can also be stressful under certain circumstances. Who hasn't arrived at a meeting feeling tired and exhausted and having severe problems in concentrating on what is going on in the discussion?
• Having to be at certain places at certain times poses massive restrictions on personal timetables. ‘If I'm in this place this day, I can't be in that place the next day!' - Who hasn't been in this kind of trouble?
• Face-to-face events often do not meet expectations with regard to efficiency and outcomes. Who hasn't returned from a business trip complaining about the blatant disproportion of what had to be done to organize the trip and the stay, and what has been the benefit of it?
• The need for people not being present at the same location to come together at short notice in order to consult with one another is steadily growing. No matter if we talk about managers who need to make an important strategic decision or members of a project group who urgently need to exchange opinions on the progress of a project under consideration of technical drawings and sketches - Who hasn't complained about the limited possibilities of a telephone conference when it comes to deal with complex issues?
• The need for physical presence at vocational trainings or educational seminars excludes many people from participation in such programs from the outset. Who hasn't become upset about the fact that in many areas there are still not enough opportunities for the advancement and integration of people with no or limited mobility?

If we try to determine in retrospect the value of a meeting, a collaborative work session or a training seminar, we basically take a look at two criteria: first, the quality of such a meeting or whatever and the benefit it has brought about, and second, the effort required to take part in it or set it up. Face-to-face settings may be indispensable in certain situations and for certain purposes, there can be no doubt about that. However, for communication settings for which physical presence of the persons involved is no conditio sine qua non, vitero offers a real alternative!
